bicycle built for two

This sweet photo shoot made me think of when mimoun and I rode a tandem bike around the city walls of Xian, China. It was not as easy as I thought it would be!

I love these warm colors...

last day

This sunny beautiful day is my last day working for the Epilepsy Phenome/Genome Project. EPGP is led by the smartest, most caring neurologists who truly want to impact their patients' lives through research.  I can't wait to see what exciting discoveries are made in the coming years.

I hope you're all enjoying your work, and if not, I wish you the courage and plain old good luck to find a job that is meaningful to you. xoxo

sidewalk sale

On sunday, mimoun and I had a sidewalk sale along 19th street next to dolores park. Some friends stopped by to enjoy the sunny weather and keep us company while we haggled and pressed our items on passersby (don't worry, we weren't that intense). The afternoon made me miss hanging out outside in the hot weather. Rooftop barbeques are ubiquitous in DC and at night, people sit on their stoop together and swat away mosquitos. Ah.. the east coast.

week of lasts

Gah! Things are a little crazy in our little apartment as Mimoun and I have started packing up for our big move. This week is the week of Lasts... last $1 PBR night at El Rio, last vegetarian italiano sandwich from the cantonese cafe at ucsf (see below), last Pint Night at the brew co, last snuggle fest with libbydog, etc. etc.  so sad, but sort of exciting, too.
behold the glory! artichoke heart, provolone, pesto, avocado, sundried tomato on seeded sourdough.  imagine the perfection with a japanese iced coffee drink for breakfast or a lemon calistoga for lunch

Anything else we should fit in before our flight on Monday?

work hangovers

what is your strategy?

I generally show up late. That extra hour of sleep allows me to be just slightly more productive than if I were to show up on time, nauseous and pale.

Dress in layers. You just never know when a bout of chills or a heat flash will wash over you.

Deny or Acknowledge? A tricky decision. I suppose it depends on your co-workers and their level of acceptance and/or skills of perception.

hope everyone's having a great day! xoxo

SF weekend

I hope all you san franciscans enjoyed the beautiful long weekend we had. Mine was full of delightful bay area adventures...

On thursday, I finally went to "Nightlife" the uber hip (and overrated?) late night event at the Academy of Sciences.  It was tres cool to see the glowing algae, touch things in the tidepool, and watch Dominant Legs play against a background of laser constellations.  However, drinks were so expensive that all this had to happen in the spirit of good clean fun. Which is okay.....I guess. Here is a picture of my new best friend, kicking his feet up.

what a chiller.

Friday night, Mike S. let me in on the secret that you can park for free in the BART parking lot if you arrive early enough to a warriors game.  I brought spicy burritos from cancun and mike and billy showed up with an ambitious amount of 22 oz Tams. We tailgated (which I'm not sure I've ever really done before) out the back of his super fly station wagon.  As for the game.... the warriors actually won!

On Saturday, Mimoun and I biked through the park to the outer richmond to pay homage to the Shanghai Dumpling King.  We humbly feasted on the most delicious soup dumplings and fat shanghai style noodles. they tasted exactly like the ones we had in Shanghai.

We're leaving san francisco two weeks from today! I can't believe how quickly the year flew by.

where have you been in europe?

Milan
tallinn, estonia
I've never been to europe.  I imagine it would involve strolling down alleyways, open plazas, and having intellectual conversations with people who look like this...  Am I basically on track?

These whimsical photos are by Sebastiaan Bremer, via{Frolic!}.  Aren't they wonderful?

things you don't need but are so cool

I just stumbled on this useful blog that posts neat things you can buy on the internet. I wish I had discovered "all things cool" before I made really lame "I owe you" cards for my family for christmas.  I love this idea - polaroid coasters!

also... custom terrariums made from light bulbs.

guest explorer

my wonderful friend lindsay has been living and traveling in South France since the fall. She shares her well written adventures on her blog "France Part Deux".  A quick photo tour...

the brioche-like "Galettes de Roi," a special Epiphany dessert
the french version of bloomingdales or nordstroms
the Peyriac-de-Mer ponds
Lindsay's christmas tree in Toulouse
Doesn't everything in france seem to sparkle?

pothole gardens

What a sweet idea... pothold gardens to draw attention to road problems.  I bet the "after" pictures look slightly less romantic.

wanted

Sorry posts have been a little scarce lately... I started studying for this test, the MCAT.  Hopefully, taking it will bring me one step closer to spending my life working with people whose brains are unique and special, like schizophrenics.

As you've gathered, mimsy and I are moving to new yawwwk in a few short weeks! So, let me know if you are also studying for the MCAT and also live in the lower part of manhattan somewhere and are also looking for somone to study with.

twin sister

Last year at SXSW, we went to a great backyard show sponsored by some sort of coconut water. On top of being gross, it was inefficient. How can you get pleasantly drunk in the afternoon if you're going to immediately rehydrate with coconut water? reader's thoughts on coconut water? I think it tastes like warm saliva, but, it seems to have a strong following. Not sure what I'm missing.

Anywaaaay, Twin Sister played at the show and I was so hooked.  Here is a nice video of "all around and away we go."

for the ladies

how freaking cute is this...

Ukiyo-e

hiroshige
On the last day of 2010, mimoun and I perused a dreamy collection of japanese Ukiyo-e, literally "pictures of a floating world."  I thought it was neat to see the influence this technique and style had on impressionist artists after Japan opened its boarders in the 1850s. This image reminds me of a town we traveled to just outside of Kyoto where we wandered through a bamboo forest and sat by the river.

These waterfalls by Hokusai were two of my favorites from the exhibit.
